The main practical advantage of 64-bits is the much much larger memory capability. What is the difference between a 32-bit and 64-bit application from a developer point of view? Note that from the perspective of high level languages like C#, (ie you need to get hold of the 64 bit compiler and it's documentation.)

How
is the splitting done there? Do I have to worry? The problem is exactly the same, but on a larger scale. For 32-bit processors, you get trouble when your programs need near 2^32 bytes or more. (Ie 4GB.) For a true 64-bit processor, you get the same troubles the day you need near 2^64 bytes or more per process.

And if you program like on RISCs (ie, load with MOVSX or MOVZX), that's not an issue at all. Finally, even if there were 0% memory expansion due to CISC-vs-RISC and 32-bit vs 64-bit, you would probably want to add memory just because you are A 5 nanosecond (ie 200Mhz) CPU such as the AlphaServer 1000 can spend 1000000 cycles just twiddling its thumbs whilst waiting for a disk request that takes 5

Should we be upgrading our 32-bit machine to one of the new 64-bit machines? Hi, Sorry can't answer the 32 vs 64 bit. Why do you want raid 0 (it offers speed+capacity but at a high risk, ie., one disk failure all data are gone). Yeah and when you have that same data on a single drive and it fails it is not all gone. Figures, right? I think the point is that there are now 5 chances of

1) This term has had a long and consistent history of use, with only occasional excursions into marketing aberration (ie, like calling the i860 a 64-bit about calling the 8088 an 8 bit vs 16 bit CPU, the 68000 a 16 bit vs 32 bit CPU, the 80386SX a 16 bit vs 32 bit CPU, the Pentium a 32 bit vs 64 bit CPU.

The chief disadvantage of this is the difficulty of dealing with vast address spaces, ie anything over 64K in size. A 32-bit OS (again, stressing PC) I think the limitations on 16-bit vs 32=bit are more significant than those of 32-bit vs 64-bit, but this remains to be seen. -- --Prashanth Mundkur ECE, UCI "I

The normal version of MAX outputs 64-bits of data to represent the color at each pixel, ie, 16-bits each of Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha. But the code for both normal and educational executable is all 32-bit. Nate I don't believe this is true. Kinetix has stated there is absolutely no functional differnce

32-bit vs. 16-bit
The normal version of MAX outputs 64-bits of data to represent the color at each pixel, ie, 16-bits each of Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha. has never output more than 32 bit (24+8 = RGB+Alpha) images. There is an option to DITHER the 64 bit down to 24 bit True color, or just to take the nearest from the 24 bit

Why preallocate pmd in x86 32-bit PAE?
All have 32-bit sub registers which behave differently to the 8/16 bit sub registers as they zero extend to 64-bits. of recreating it can be quite large; in general one has to consider constant pools that lie anywhere in the address space; ie, you load a 64-bit constant to facilitate loading 64-bit constants.

Help - 32-bit Vs 64-bit
I'ma software developer by trade (although not games - rather vertical applications) and my assumption was based upon the fact that colors in the Win32 API are set via a COLORREF, which is a 32-bit value, but the top 8-bits are ignored (ie. 0x00BBGGRR). So even if you were in 32-bit mode, the API is limiting

What makes an AMD chip 64 bit?
It isn't even _repeatable_, ie if you do broadcast "tell me what disks exists", the results won't be ordered some way. It has nothing to do with 32-bit vs 64-bit vs 1024-bit. Once you accept that fact, you should accept the fact that device numbers not only have no meaning, they literally have no permanence

And if you program like on RISCs (ie, load with MOVSX or MOVZX), that's not an issue at all. And it also solves the IA-32 8-bit register issue. Interestingly, the same applies to x86 and x64 - you get smaller and potentially faster code if you use a literal pool rather than use 32-bit and 64-bit immediates.

I haven't seen any numbers on it, though i did see a benchmark of a 32-bit vs. 64-bit program (not sure if this was on a Linux 64-bit OS) that basically ran in a 64-bit OS than it would in a 32-bit OS. =) 2-3 years times, i'm sure a lot of people will have a 64-bit machine.
